DESCRIPTION:

Five Assegais Country Estate is a 1000 hectare fenced nature conservancy situated in the Mpumalanga highlands between Machadodorp and Badplaas, three hours from Johannesburg, halfway to the Kruger National Park from Johannesburg and in the heart of the premier trout fishing area.

Five Assegais is ideally situated to explore the surrounding area and is an easy drive to Waterval Boven, Pilgrims Rest, Lydenburg, the Sudwala Caves, Dullstroom, Belfast and Swaziland, and is only 300 km from Maputo.

ACCOMMODATION

Five Assegais offers a luxury, very private, historic, stone country house with all the amenities. This self-catering home in the wilderness has three double bedrooms and a room for kids with two bunk beds. The house has an open plan dinning, sitting room and kitchen area leading onto a patio with braai, pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the dam with views all the way to Swaziland.

The kitchen is fully equipped with gas stove and oven, microwave, and fridges. The very comfortably appointed sitting room has DSTV, video, library and a fireplace (we supply the wood).

The romantic bedrooms have very comfortable queen size beds with fine natural cotton duvets and sheets, en-suite bathrooms with shower and bath. The beds are equipped with extras throws and electric blankets; we also supply pure olive oil based soaps hand made on the estate and soft fluffy towels.

FISHING

Fishing on our four well-stocked dams will challenge and offer good sport to any level of fisherman.

FARM

The estate is a functioning African farm which is home to a stud herd of indigenous African N’guni cattle. We are in the process of re-introducing many of the wild animals that used to live in this area from wildebeest to mountain rhebuck, and klipspringers.

ACTIVITIES ON THE ESTATE

The estate is also a walker’s paradise, situated on the lip of the great African escarpment with spectacular waterfalls and sweeping views over the Komati valley down to Swaziland and over the Bankspruit Gorge that is crowned by the famous Bride’s Leap Falls, the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga. We allow visitors to bring their quad and mountain bikes to enjoy our wonderful rides and trails that traverse the estate.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

The estate is just an hour’s drive from one of South Africa’s most spectacular game parks, Songimvilla, a 60 thousand hectare game reserve which boasts not only wonderful landscapes deep in the Drakensberg but also the big four (no lion). Badplaas - just 20 minutes away - features a world famous spa and natural volcanic heated spring waters, game viewing on horse back and several restaurants.

Our nearest town Machadodorp is a historic village that was the capital of the Free Republics for a few months when President Kruger transferred his government and the Mint here after the Boers had been driven from Pretoria. Here the last major battles of the Boer war were fought, at Dalmanathua and Berg-en-Dal after which the war became the first great guerrilla conflict.
