| Day 1: |
| Leave Cape
Town via Du Toits Kloof Pass, and head into the fruit and vineyard areas of the Breede River Valley, before
spending a good part of the day travelling through the different environment of the Little
Karoo. Pass through Barrydale, Ladismith, and perhaps pause a while in Calitzdorp,
Port capital of South Africa
to sample the local product. End the day in Oudtshoorn,
ostrich capital of the world. |
| Overnight:
Hlangana Lodge or Kleinplaas Resort |
| Day 2: |
| A days
tour incorporating two of the countrys most spectacular mountain routes, and
visiting the Cango Caves en route. Taking the back roads to the foot of the Swartberg,
negotiate the highest mountains in the Western Cape via the magnificent Swartberg Pass,
and into the Great Karoo. Enjoy a light lunch in the typical Karoo village of Prince
Albert before returning through the mountains via the equally impressive Meirings Poort. |
| Overnight:
Hlangana Lodge or Kleinplaas Resort |
| Day 3: |
| Visit one of
the nearby Ostrich show farms before heading over the Outeniqua mountains via the
spectacular Robinson Pass, and back to the contrastingly different coastal environment
around Mossel Bay, and an opportunity to explore the Portuguese influence in the
development of South Africa. Spend some time exploring the coastal, forestry and Lakes
Wilderness areas en route to the Garden Route town of Knysna, ideally situated on South
Africas second largest estuary. |
| Overnight:
Log Inn or Graywood Hotel |
| Day 4: |
| Enjoy the
Featherbed experience. A casual cruise across the estuary, to the privately
owned Featherbed Nature Reserve, where a tractor trailer ride to the top of the Western
Head provides magnificent views over coastline, and the lagoon itself. Taking an optional
walk back through forests, caves, and a lagoon side path, lunch is served under the
milkwood trees before returning to the mainland. The remainder of the afternoon is at
leisure, and can be spent browsing around this quaint town, possibly in search of genuine
local mementoes. |
| Overnight:
Log Inn or Graywood Hotel |
| Day 5: |
| Travel the
short distance to the contrastingly upmarket resort of Plettenberg Bay, and experiencing
this holiday environment from various local viewpoints before taking a casual cruise up
the tranquil Keurbooms River in the company of a knowledgeable river guide. Continue east
via the contrasting environments of tranquil Natures Valley, and its impressive
beach, before carrying on to the rugged coastal environment of Storms River Mouth, where
there is an opportunity to walk through the indigenous forest to the impressive river
mouth itself. Call in to view the worlds highest Bungi Jump at the Bloukrans River Bridge
on the return to Knysna. |
| Overnight:
Log Inn or Graywood Hotel |
| Day 6: |
| Return to Cape
Town via the Overberg farming region, stopping off at an Aloe factory in Albertinia, as
well as visiting the historic town of Swellendam, third oldest in South Africa, and at one
brief time, an independent Republic ! Approach the Mother city via the apple growing areas
around Elgin and Grabouw, and over the Hottentots Holland mountains via Sir Lowrys Pass to
the selected drop off point in Cape Town. |
