Did you know that Witsand has the the largest concentration of Southern Right Whalesduring the calving season (June to November annually)? This rate is also increasing by 7% each year.
A whale count done from a helicopter in 2009 resulted in a count of as many as 117 adults and 49 calves, confirming Witsand's reputation as the whale nursery of South Africa!
Witsands has a rich history dating back to 1488 thanks to Vasco De Gama and the town was officially established in 1908. Witsand Tourism has decided to celebrate this history through this festival. The festival will also be a fund raiser for the local child welfare organisations.
The festival includes a large does of old fashioned family fun! There will be a historical walk, a variety of concerts and performances, a fun walk as well as a marine eco walk, stalls, children and teens entertainment and more.
