About the Cape Town Military Tattoo

The annual Cape Military Tattoo at the Castle of Good Hope will showcase the large number of both full and part time military personnel who have been working hard to produce a fantastic display.

Look forward to trumpeting fanfare and favourite repeat acts such as the opening ceremony by the Castle Guard playing the "1812" Overture by Tchaikovsky and they'll be accompanied by the Cape Field Artillery's Saluting Troop.

This is a fantastic event that is growing in popularity. The event is strongly supported by the Cape Town City Council and is primarily funded by the South African National Defence Force.

Come and enjoy a South African tradition of the tattoo which dates back to the 17th Century! Apart from the military aspect of the show, there are also Highland Dancers, and other acts which will thrill the crowds.

Celebrating 20 years of democracy, the Tattoo will also include and aspect of remembrance of World War 1, which began in 1914 and ended in 1918. South African Ship, Mendi will be remembered. The sinking of the Mendi was perhaps the greatest loss of life in a single event the South African military had experienced.

The finale of the Tattoo will culminate in the crowd-favourite performance of the 1812 Overture. The excitement will reach fever-pitch as the 25-pounder guns ar fired in-synch with the music.
