On 6 November 2016, The People’s Race will be run for the 23rd time, inviting sportsmen and -women from all over South Africa to participate. Formally known as the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon, this event is made up of a standard marathon of 42.2 kilometres, a half marathon of 21.1 kilometres, and a 10-kilometre run.
The race takes place at the beautiful FNB Stadium in the vibrant, historical Soweto Township, just outside the city centre of Johannesburg, Gauteng. This is both the start and finish venue.
Entries to the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon close on 5 September 2016, or when 25 000 entrants have registered. Each entrant will receive a race pack; which contains a race number, free t-shirt, timing chip and race number / bib; as well as a commemorative medal.
The standard marathon starts at 06h00, the half marathon at 06h30, and the 10 kilometre at 07h00. Entrance fee is R200, R150 and R120 respectively. The runners will need to bring their ChampionChip (unless purchased or hired), ID book / driver's license / passport, confirmation of registration slip, and their student card or a letter from their school (if applicable).
Soweto is the largest township in the country, and has a deep, complex history. Today, it is a vibrant hub of activity and growth, one that tells a poignant tale of the Rainbow Nation that is South Africa.
