Northcliff, Johannesburg
Northcliff is incredibly well situated - there is ease of access to a number of major shopping malls, the N1 is easily reachable and getting to either the city or Sandton is relatively simple, given Johannesburg’s notorious traffic. Pretty Emmarentia lies just beneath the cliff of Northcliff, and the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam provide a welcome weekend respite.
One of Johannesburg’s older upmarket suburbs, leafy Northcliff, lies north west of the city’s CBD, its cliff a landmark on the otherwise predominantly flat skyline of the city. Northcliff’s large homes lie on steep inclines that wend their way up the cliff, the views superlative, and the winding tree-lined streets of a different nature to many of the other suburbs in Johannesburg that function mainly on grid systems. Northcliff’s tower may no longer be ‘safe’ for night time rendezvous, for which it was once extremely popular, but the ridge, made up predominantly of hard smooth quartzite, offers a number of natural climbs for avid rock climbing fans. The routes are relatively short and the view from the top of Northcliff ridge excellent - the whole of the northern suburbs lie exposed - and on a clear day, one can see as far as Sandton and beyond.
The trendy suburbs of Melville and Greenside, with their popular pavement culture and vibey restaurants, shops and boutiques are both natural evening hang outs when staying in Northcliff. These slightly bohemian but classically trendy neighbourhoods provide hours of people watching and good food options.
