Some 60 km from Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda is in essence completely isolated, with only two roads in and out of the village. Established in 1875 and named by the preacher Andrew Murray, Nieu-Bethesda was eclipsed by larger towns during the 1930s and ‘40s and became quite impoverished. From Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport:
1. Exit the airport onto Allister Miller Drive.
Turn left onto Forest Hill Northbound Road.
Turn right onto Walmer Blvd (M9).
2. Merge onto Settlers Highway (M4) following signs for R75/Uitenhage.
3. Take the N2 briefly, then exit onto R75 toward Uitenhage.
Stay on R75 for about 200 km.
4. Continue on R63 for a short stretch.
Turn right onto N9/R61/R63 toward Graaff-Reinet.
Stay on N9/R61 for around 27 km.
5. Turn left onto the road signposted to Nieu-Bethesda (this is a gravel road).
Follow the road for about 21.6 km into town.
6. In Nieu-Bethesda, follow Martin Street, then turn right onto Petersen Street.
