About Richtersveld 4x4 Trails

The Richtersveld Park is nestled in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, right on the border of the Namibian mountain ranges. The arid wilderness of this region makes for awe-inspiring beauty of a unique kind; one that will resonate with visitors and remain within their deepest, fondest memories.

The Richtersveld 4x4 Trails are not so much formal trails as a network of criss-cross roads through the park. They take drivers along the mighty Orange River and showcase some of Africa’s most gorgeous backdrops. The roads extend for a total of some 200 kilometres, but any combination of trails can be chosen. They include areas of gravel, corrugations, rocks, and mile upon mile of sand. Although this trail does not require a guide, there are some exciting parts that will inspire drivers to test their skills and vehicles.

One of the major draw cards to the Richtersveld 4x4 Trails and their surrounds are the wild flowers that explode into colourful bloom every year between June and October. These erupt in almost perfect synchronisation, filling the otherwise sparse landscapes with bright blooms in dense rugs. Summer (December to February) can become extremely hot, with highs often reaching the mid-40’s. Winters (June to August) are also particularly cold. This means that spring and autumn are the most temperate times to tackle the 4x4 trails.

Although arid, this area is home to plenty in the way of plant and animal life. The variety is impressive, and drivers and their passengers will be well-rewarded with succulents, raptors, reptiles and more.

Drivers and their passengers should come prepared with clean drinking water and plenty of food supplies, as these are not readily available along the way.

Other activities in the Richtersveld Park include walking, hiking, and taking a refreshing dip in the magnificent Orange River.
