So, it is not surprising that the little beach of a place like Hondeklip Bay (or Hondeklipbaai) lures visitors to enjoy the cool crispness of the Atlantic Ocean and the bracing sea spray.

Hondeklip Bay is a very quiet little village that was initially established as a harbour for the export of the copper ore found in the area. However, that harbour was replaced by a safer one at Port Nolloth, and the village became a quiet fishermen’s hub, where little more than the changing of the tides governed what people did and where they went.

Today, it is still a fantastic fishing spot. Anglers stand on the sandy shores or the rocky outcrops and cast their lines, waiting for the telltale nibble of a great catch. There is also crayfish here, which makes for excellent eating. For the less energetic, just take a good book and enjoy it in the warm sunshine of the Northern Cape coastline, listening to the backing track of the crashing waves. The rock pools are always fun for little ones.

There is a shipwreck in the waters off the beach, which provides a stunning place to live for many fish, crustaceans and marine plant species.

This is a resort village with an equally quiet beach that is not overrun by tourists and travellers. It is a retreat from the city life. Its residents are friendly and welcoming; very happy to share a meal or a cup of coffee with their visitors at one of the local restaurants. Cape Town and its international airport are six hours away from Hondeklip Bay Beach; while the Namaqua National Park is just over an hour away.
