South Africa's northernmost province, and named after the second biggest river in Africa, the Limpopo is regarded as the gateway to sub-Saharan Africa. With vast expanses of bushveld wilderness as its predominant vegetation, the Limpopo has access to some of the best game reserves of any province – the Greater Kruger National Park, Lapalala Wilderness, Mabalingwe, Nylsvlei Nature Reserve, Hans Merensky Reserve, Marakele National Park and the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.

Probably because of its remoteness much of the Limpopo remains unblemished and thus a true picture for nature lovers of the 'African experience'. Its natural beauty and remarkable scenery mean nature reserves and safari style holidays bring visitors from all over the country and the world to its borders.

The Greater Kruger Park includes game reserves bordering on the Kruger park and the park itself. Trails, lodges, safaris, guest farms, campsites and luxury hotels support the annual high turnover of tourists to this part of the country.

The Valley of the Olifants River lies in the eastern parts of the Limpopo – a greener rendition of the more traditionally portrayed 'bushveld' parts of the province. It includes the northern camps of the Kruger, a range of private game parks and conservancies like the Timbavati, Motswari and Hans Merensky, unspoilt forests and the beautiful northern aspects of the Drakensberg. Fruit plantations are an indication of the subtropical quality of this region.

Bed and breakfast and self-catering establishments, guest homes, farms, lodges and retreats are all available in the Soutpansberg towns like Louis Trichardt, Makhado, Mapungubwe and Musina. The Soutpansberg, the northernmost mountain range of the country, is part of the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve.

Magical Haenertsburg and the Magoebaskloof of the Capricorn region (named after the tropic of Capricorn that passes through this part of the province) deserve special mention for their misty mountain appeal and fascination for hikers.
