About the Montagu Makiti Festival

Perched on the bank of the Breede River, where the fauna and flora of the Western Cape converge in an awesome display of utter serenity and beauty, is the little town of Montagu. And, although small, it is bursting with fantastic spots to eat, drink, and experience the warm hospitality of South Africa. There are few better ways to experience this than at the annual Montagu Makiti Festival.

This is a family and heritage festival that is scattered over a number of locations all over the town. There will be olive tastings at the Olivenhof Olive Estate (a working olive farm), stalls at which to shop at the Bath Street Market, a tractor ride at the Protea Farm, and live music at Kloof Padstal.

Visitors that want to pair their Montagu excursion with a liberal dose of adrenalin can go on guided rock climbing and abseiling treks in the surrounding mountains. There are many museums and art galleries flanking the roads of Montagu, which tell the rich tale of the history and heritage of this town, as well as of the Montagu of today. Seeing the creativity that emanates from this little hub is inspiring. Those that are in the mood for a generous injection of all things cultural can also book to watch some of the shows.

The Montagu Makiti Festival will be held from 18 to 20 September 2020 (TBC). The Heritage Parade; which is always a firm favourite of song, dance, colour and culture; will be on Saturday, 19 September.
