About the Cape Town International Kite Festival
For more than 30 years, the Cape Town International Kite Festival has brought colour, creativity and a message of hope to the skies above Cape Town. In 2026, the much-loved event returns for its 32nd edition under the theme #ColourTheSky, taking place on 24 and 25 October at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery. The festival brings thousands of visitors together while raising vital awareness of mental health and supporting the important work of Cape Mental Health.
First established in 1994, the festival has become Africa’s oldest kite festival and one of South Africa’s most established mental health awareness events. While spectacular kites, entertainment and family activities provide the colourful backdrop, the festival’s purpose extends far beyond the festivities. It aims to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage people to seek support when they need it, and promote a greater understanding of the experiences faced by those living with mental health conditions.
The 2026 theme, #ColourTheSky, highlights the importance of connection and the positive impact that compassion, understanding and support can have within a community. Much like the individual kites that combine to create a spectacular display across the Cape Town skyline, every person has the ability to contribute something meaningful to the lives of others.
Over one vibrant weekend, local, national and international kite flyers will fill the sky with enormous and intricately designed kites, creating a spectacular celebration of colour, creativity and community. Alongside the visual spectacle, the Cape Town International Kite Festival provides an opportunity to stand together for mental health awareness, support Cape Mental Health, and help spread a message of hope and resilience.
