About the Cape Town International Kite Festival

The Cape Town International Kite Festival returns in 2025 with renewed energy and a meaningful theme, #CourageToFly. Now celebrating its 31st anniversary, the festival stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and community spirit.

This year, it honours the bravery required to face life’s challenges, particularly those related to mental health. For the first time since the pandemic, the festival will once again unfold over two full days, taking place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October 2025. This marks a joyful return to its beloved extended format. Adding to the excitement, the event will soar from a brand-new location at the Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery, where the skies will be transformed into a vibrant display of colour, creativity, and courage.

Since its inception in 1994, the Cape Town International Kite Festival has been proudly presented by Cape Mental Health as part of its commitment to raising awareness and promoting mental well-being. Each kite that takes flight serves as a symbol of freedom, imagination, and the inner strength it takes to seek help, speak openly, and support others on their mental health journeys.

The chosen theme, #CourageToFly, reflects the world’s collective resilience in the face of ongoing uncertainty, from political unrest and social change to the lingering impact of the pandemic. These pressures have led to increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges across the globe. In South Africa alone, it is estimated that 16.5% of the population lives with a mental disorder, and the persistent stigma surrounding these conditions continues to stand in the way of treatment and recovery.
