Tweeling, Northern Free State
The word “tweeling” means twins in Afrikaans, and the town of this name was established in 1920 on two farms that were named after a pair of similar looking hills in the area (Tweelingspruit and Tweelingkop). The town is a small one, situated in the South African province of the Free State, just east of the Liebenbergsvlei River.
This entire area was once the hunting spot of choice for the earliest settlers. It is infused with history, which complements the vast areas of untouched landscape. Today, Tweeling is known for its warm hospitality and its relaxed vibe. Visitors from all over South African and the world are invited to unwind and enjoy the sweet smell of the African summer while watching the birds soar overhead.
There are a number of walking, cycling and mountain biking trails around Tweeling. These are a delight to explore against the beautiful backdrops of the Free State.
Tweeling is situated about two hours' drive away from Johannesburg, Gauteng. This is the commercial, urban and retail heart of the country, as well as the home of the OR Tambo International Airport.
