About Mthatha Airport
The Mthatha Airport is great for visitors that have booked accommodation in Mthatha or the surrounding seaside towns and villages. The airport was called the KD Matanzima Airport after the president of the area that was once known as the Transkei.
The airport offers commercial flights to and from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg via Airlink, and invites visitors from all over the world to experience the history, culture, and spectacular vistas of the Wild Coast. Upgrades are on the cards so that this airport can expand and develop, welcoming flights from the other major international airports in Cape Town and Durban too.
It has two runways of 1 500 metres and 2 000 metres in length respectively, which means it can handle larger aircraft.
While there are a few hotels and B&B’s in Mthatha itself, there are also lodges and inviting getaways slightly further afield. Wherever you decide to stay, you’ll no doubt feel the sense of adventure that the Wild Coast inspires in a traveller. The ocean is powerful and unpredictable with incredible surfing waves, the rolling hills and mountains are blanketed in lush green grass, and the charming African villages feel like a throwback to yesteryear, when life was simpler and days longer.
Visit the Nelson Mandela Museum while you’re in Mthatha and head to the countryside just outside the city to witness the Collywobbles Vulture Colony. Then, just a few hours’ drive to the coast will reveal a world of other natural attractions and must-sees. These include the incredible beaches, the Dwesa-Cwebe Marine Protected Area, Hole in the Wall, and the Hluleka Nature Reserve.
