Relax and enjoy peace and tranquillity in spectacular surroundings, with personal attention from your hosts Val and Ian. Cathkin Cottage B&B is situated in the heart of the Drakensberg Mountains and is the ideal place from which to explore most of the Drakensberg.

We have a wealth of information to offer on the surrounding areas and an information folder on what to see and do during your stay is handed to each guest on arrival and we are happy to make bookings and reservations for whatever you wish to do. We are 2 hours from Durban and 3.1/2 hours drive from Johannesburg on all tarred roads and close to Champagne Castle, Monks Cowl and Cathkin Peaks - on the edge of the Ukhahlamba World Heritage Site, KwaZulu Natal.

Accommodation


Our rooms all have en suite bathrooms with individual private entrances from our lovely gardens and all have tea and coffee making facilities, personal toiletries, heaters/fans, and daily maid service. You have table and chairs outside your accommodation for your own imndividual use whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee or a glass of wine South African as you relax in the beautiful surroundings of our colourful garden.

Breakfast


A delicious English and/or Continental breakfast is included in the daily rate. This is served on the patio overlooking the pool area and with spectacular views onto the mountains. Here you are welcome to relax over an extra cup of coffee and enjoy a chat with other guests from around the world. We are happy to help you plan your day in the mountains over coffee.

Facilities & Services


Guests are welcome to swim in the pool, relax in the garden and listen to the many birds. We also have braai and picnic areas under shady trees where you can enjoy a braai, sundowner after a swim or your walk into the mountains. Packed lunches are available for picnics in the mountains or beside one of the many streams and waterfalls. A laundry service is available.

Attractions


The scenic Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg has much to offer visitors, keeping you happy and relaxed for many days. Local attractions are mostly within a 10 minute drive from Cathkin Cottage and walking/hiking trails start at the cottage, so you don’t even need to get into your car.

The closest attractions include the many hiking and walking trails from Monks Cowl Conservation area, horseriding in the mountains or in a nature reserve where you get up close to rhino, giraffe, wildebeest, buck, zebra, etc. There are also many sporting activities including a championship 18 hole golf course, tennnis, bowls, squash etc. Guided tours to bushmen paintings, a falconry display, Drakensberg Boys Choir Concerts are a must for visitors.

Helicopter flips over the mountains are easily arranged. Cathedral Peak and Didima Rock Art Centre is a scenic 40 minute drive. Local arts and crafts are plentiful and we have excellent restaurants, coffee shops and tea gardens close by, all offering value for money meals. We are close to the Champagne Sports 18 hole golf course.

Tours & Day Trips


For those wishing to explore a bit further afield the following day trips are all just over an hours drive from Cathkin Cottage: Giants Castle to see the only San museum in the world where visitors are given explanations of good examples of rock art and how the bushmen lived. Spioenkop battlefield and nature reserve.
Midlands Meander and craft route. Royal Natal National Park.
