Baleens is a small, privately owned hotel situated close to Grotto Beach in the picturesque town of Hermanus. Hermanus is one of the most beautiful towns in South Africa, offering magnificent ocean vistas against a majestic mountain backdrop. Hermanus claims to have the best land based whale watching platform in the world from its elevated cliffs. From as early as May and June the Southern Right Whales can be spotted in Walker Bay, staying until late November.

We are situated six kilometers from the town centre in Voelklip, just one road from the beach and the lagoon. The suburb is dignified, quiet and peaceful; even in the height of the season. Grotto Beach is a Blue Flag beach and stretches for many miles, from the cliff paths towards Gansbaai. The lagoon is a paradise for bird watchers and flamingos are often seen.

Accommodation

Baleens Hotel has 21 rooms; all double, triple or family. The emphasis is on inexpensive and non frilly accommodation, striving to offer the best possible value for money. All the rooms are ensuite with showers and two have shower and bath. The sea facing rooms have a panoramic wide view of the bay. Children are welcome and we provide cots on request.

The lounge areas are decorated with original artwork and interesting artifacts, mainly of African origin. We encourage a relaxed atmosphere and the guests seem to particularly enjoy the informality offered.

All the rooms have television and cable television is available in the public areas. There is a popular A La Carte restaurant, open in the evenings with a full bar. Many of our patrons elect to spend the day exploring the region and the town, returning to the Hotel in the evening for a drink and dinner. In the morning, the guests often step out for an early walk or run on the beach before breakfast.

Wifi is accessible in the lounges and there is a computer terminal for guests to use free of charge. We recently installed a swimming pool, which is solar heated. This is proving to be very popular especially in the warm evenings before dinner. There are braai (barbeque) facilities by the pool. On cold evenings, a wood fire crackles in the lounge and in the pub and the atmosphere is most inviting. Guests can enjoy a game of pool.

Breakfast

Breakfast is a freshly prepared simple English breakfast (eggs and bacon), with cereals, yoghurt and a big fresh fruit salad.

Conferences

There is a large conference room which is bright and airy. It can comfortably seat 20 persons or more. If the client books the entire establishment, then the delegates can move easily from lounge to lounge, to patio to conference room which all flow conveniently from one space to the next.

Weddings

Baleens works wonderfully as a venue for small to medium weddings. The dining room can seat approximately 50 persons without the need to hire a marquis. Additional seating could be arranged in the adjacent lounge. We would be delighted to handle all the catering for the whole weekend. There would be no need to hire catering equipment as everything is provided … you would just need to do the decorating of the dining room, lounges etc. We are fully licensed, but as we are in a residential area, we do not permit loud music after 11pm. You can relax knowing that your family members and friends do not have to drive home after the party.

Please note however, that it is a prerequisite that the wedding party books all the rooms for both the Friday and Saturday nights for a Saturday wedding. There are 21 rooms and we can sleep 42 to 52 persons including children.
