The Madikwe Sisal Co-operative is situated in the North West Province in the magisterial district of Madikwe, 90km north of Rustenburg. The project is based on state owned land on the Toelane sisal farm. There is a constant source of fibre generated from the farm that is utilized in the production of hand made paper. The project was established as part of a cluster of activities affiliated to sisal production and the beneficiation of sisal fibre.

The papermaking studio is located in a large workshop that was donated by the Department of Agriculture, which is shared with the fibre processing unit. This relationship necessitates access to a constant supply of sisal fibre. Sisal fibre produces a very strong attractive paper. Also associated with the project are the sisal farmers and a sisal nursery. This cluster of activity provides support for each of the units that operate in the sisal industry. It also establishes the units as a more notable industry in the area attracting support from numerous sectors.

Madikwe Sisal has been established as an acid free mill in order to make it compliant with National Archives requirements so that it can supply DAC with archival paper (acid free paper). At present this is mainly in the form of pulp sheets which are sent to the PRDU who purchase them and make paper sheets and specialised board from the refined sisal pulp.
