About Motshetshe Trail

Visit the Free State Botanical Gardens and get on the beautiful two kilometre Motshetshe trail. A small entrance fee is applicable and the gardens are open from 08h00 to 16h30 Monday to Friday and until 17h00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The trail gets its name from a Sotho word which means mountain cabbage tree and the slopes along this trail are brimming with this fascinating specimen. Starting at the dam, the trail runs along the main peaks showing off vast range of life in the area. The views over the Botanical gardens are exquisite from the peaks and you can expect to see about 400 species of plants here as well as at least 144 different types of birds, 32 mammal species and 54 reptile species.

Not only is nature all around you but this is also an historical site where an old rock wall dating back to the Anglo Boer War still stands as well as a Basotho Iron Age site where you can see where and how the South Sotho used to live.
