Zebra Crossing is an up-market, self catering guest house nestled in the awe-inspiring Cathkin Estate Game Sanctuary in the Central Drakensberg mountain range.

Imagine morning sunlight reflecting ever-changing hues off the major mountains of Champagne Castle. Cathkin Peak and Monks Cowl, progressing to sunset magic as light rays filter through the ‘eye of the needle’ and over the general berg in the late afternoons. Imagine further that this is the scenario that awaits you without having to set foot from your ‘home from home’.

Your hosts, Fiona and Ian, are permanent residents on the Estate a mere 300m away from Zebra Crossing. They will ensure that all your needs are catered for. Their intimate knowledge of the people, places and things to do in the area will greatly enhance your stay.

About Cathkin Estate and Champagne Valley


As a resident of Cathkin Estates you enjoy a secure, fenced - in mountain retreat with stunning scenery. The ambience is one of peace and tranquility. This eco-estate is home to free roaming antelope comprising of eland, blesbuck, red hartebeest, oribi, zebra and wildebeest. Birdlife includes many varieties of grassland birds, waterfowl and raptors such as jackal buzzards, cape vultures, yellow-billed kites, snake eagles and black shouldered kites.

Walks start from your front door. There is a short walk to a hide from which one can study vultures feeding from carcasses in the “vultures’ restaurant”. Another hike is through a gorge leading to a waterfall through an indigenous forest teeming with birdlife. Alternatively, one can enjoy pleasant strolls anywhere on the 1000ha estate.

Activities nearby include day walks and mountain trails suiting all fitness levels, bird of prey display shows, art and craft shops, 4rivers adventures, quad biking, zip-line, archery and paintball. Supermarkets, convenience stores and a variety of restaurants are a short drive from the Estate. There a 2 golf courses within 5 minutes drive of the Estate , one welcoming weekend ‘hackers’ and beginners and the other a finely manicured, world renowned championship golf experience.

DIRECTIONS:

From Durban
a) Along the N3, pass Shell Ultra City and take the Exit 194, Winterton / Bergville / Colenso (R74) glide off. Turn left and proceed for 20km to Winterton. Opposite the Engen garage, turn left onto the R600 CENTRAL BERG road. Proceed for ± 13km to the crossroad junction.

b) (Or a short cut but not used at night) Along the N3, take EXIT 179. Estcourt North / Giants Castle / Loskop / Central Drakensberg. Travel for approximately 20 minutes, until the crossroads. Turn left into the R600 and follow *******

*******Cross straight over and continue for ± 11,9 km. You will pass The Nest Hotel and Champagne Sports Resort, and the turn-off to the Drakensberg Sun Hotel (off to the right). Continue towards Champagne Castle Hotel, and take the next turn-off to the left, 0.8km, sign-posted 'Champagne Valley / Mountain Splendour Caravan Park / Golf Course / Champagne Lane'. Immediately after the low-level bridge, turn to the left, and PASS Monks Cowl Country Club and Champagne Valley Resort. Tavel another 1km after Champagne Valley Resort pass the entrance to Inkungu on your right. The Entrance to Cathkin Estates is in front of you. Please tell the guard that you are going to no. 52 - Zebra Crossing.

Keep on the main road through the estate for approximately 2km. You will see a dam on your left. Drive over the dam wall and at the first road, turn left. No 52 - Zebra Crossing is the first house on your right. Fiona and Ian live at no. 48. Please note that Brett and Michelle, our house sitters will meet you. You have arrived!

From Johannesburg
a) Scenic Route: CAUTION: Do not follow this route in wet or freezing conditions. Johannesburg to Harrismith on N3. At Harrismith take EXIT 29. Turn right onto N5 towards BETHLEHEM/BLOEMFONTEIN. (Follow the Alternative Route To Durban signs). You will see the Engen Truck Sop, Spur Village and The Harrismith Inn on your left Proceed for ± 5km; turn left onto the R712 QWA-QWA / BERGVILLE road. Proceed for ± 10kms. Turn left again on the BERGVILLE / OLIVIERSHOEK PASS road. Continue past Sterkfontein dam, down Oliviershoek Pass, straight through Bergville and onto Winterton. Opposite the Engen garage, turn right onto the R600 CENTRAL BERG road; proceed for ± 13km to the crossroad junction.

b) Freeway Route:
Johannesburg to Van Reenen's Pass on the N3. Take the first glide off after the Tugela Toll Plaza, which is at the bottom of Van Reenen's Pass. Turn left for ± 4 kms on the N11 and then turn right towards WINTERTON onto the R600. You will cross over the N3 concrete highway. At the T-junction (R74), turn left towards Winterton. In Winterton, opposite the Engen garage, turn right onto the R600 CENTRAL BERG road. Proceed for ± 13km to the crossroad junction.

Alternatively: you may continue on the N3 from the tollgate towards Estcourt (for about 38kms), until you reach EXIT 194, the R74 / BERGVILLE / COLENSO/GREYTOWN glide off. Turn right over the bridge and proceed for ± 20 kms to Winterton. Opposite the Engen garage, turn left onto the R600 CENTRAL BERG road. Proceed for ± 13km to the crossroad junction.
