DESCRIPTION:
iKhayalamafu – the ‘house in the clouds’
your private Drakensberg experience
We are high in the Monk’s Cowl Reserve of the beautiful central Drakensberg Mountains and closer to paradise than anywhere else in the Champagne Valley. Step from your cabin into the Ukhahlamba / Drakensberg World Heritage Site and walk beneath the dramatic Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle. Then enjoy the quiet and peace of the evenings far from civilization, with the sound of the stream flowing gently past your veranda.
You will love the seclusion and peace, and your cabin’s log fire will warm your soul. If you are looking for a romantic destination and you enjoy the majesty of the Drakensberg Mountains, this is the place for you. We have over 95 hectares of mountains, streams, spectacular waterfalls, and indigenous forests, covered by trails that are closed to the general public, but open to you, our guest.
The Cabins
Both cabins have a large double bedroom / lounge, with a cosy fireplace. We supply firewood from eradicated alien trees, and make up the fire when we service your cabin each morning of your stay. Your kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, hob, microwave oven, crockery, pots and pans, cutlery, etc. Your outside covered deck has a Weber barbecue and furniture for outside dining – we supply charcoal and firelighters – while your bathroom is luxuriously large and provided with linen and towels.
We do not accept children or pets, and each cabin takes only one couple.
We generate eco-friendly electricity from a combination of solar and hydro power. We are not hardwired into the national grid, and we do not have power cuts. The cool water comes from our fresh mountain streams; it is only out of the rock for five minutes when we capture and filter it. The only flavour it merits is good whisky.
You will drive a kilometre and a half into the wilderness to reach this breathtaking destination, so leave your Porsche at home, as well as the cares and stresses of the modern world.
Activities
Not many get to experience these wonderful mountains close up. Whether it is raining, snowing, or gloriously sunny, be inspired by breathtaking scenery, friendly hospitality, and an unparalleled sense of place. Bring your hiking boots and your binoculars; look out for the buck, eagles, vultures, and other wonderful wildlife on our property; enjoy the sheer range of indigenous flowers and trees; gaze at the clear night sky with its dazzlingly bright stars; or simply put your feet up and chill out.
We look forward to your stay with us in this magical hideaway. |

DIRECTIONS:
From Winterton:
Follow the R600 to the Central Berg – past Thokozisa, past Cedarwood Shopping Centre, past the Drakensberg Boys’ School, and past the Champagne Castle Hotel – until you reach the gate to the Monk’s Cowl Reserve. Phone us as you pass the school and we shall meet you at the gate and guide you to your cabin. You do not need to pay an entrance fee.
The access road:
From the Monk’s Cowl car park, which is at an elevation of 1 480m (4 856 feet), to the cabins (1 550m or 5 085 feet) is a drive of 1,3km and an ascent of 70m (229 feet). The road is maintained and stoned regularly, but it is steep in parts and it is slippery in wet weather. Sedan motor cars can be used in dry conditions (though leave your Porsche at home), but an SUV is highly recommended. A 4x4 vehicle would be even better.
Monk’s Cowl gate:
The gate to the Monk’s Cowl Reserve is locked at 18h00 or 19h00 in the evening (depending on the time of the year) and opened only at 06h00 in the morning. If you wish to go out at night, we shall give you a key to the gate and you will be expected to lock it behind you.
