DESCRIPTION:

Picture sitting on a lovely timber deck overlooking the Drakensberg rolling hills and the meandering Mooi River. In summer, green and lush; sheep grazing, horses galloping. Picnics on the riverbed under the huge oak trees. Fly fishing at one of the trout dams.

In winter, cold with occasional snow-capped mountains. The fireplace blazing, the underfloor heating simmering, and the spectacular dark night sky bejewelled with the brightest stars. A little piece of South African heaven no matter what time of the year.

Galway cottage is situated on the Bend Trout and Eco Estate, approximately 20 kilometres outside of Nottingham Road on the well-known Midlands Meander. Galway cottage is one of the upmarket, free-standing residential properties on The Bend. The houses are all stone-clad (hence the origins of the name Galway cottage) with sandstone quarried on the estate; each house must conform to the development specifications. This creates a unified look to The Bend properties.

ACCOMMODATION

The cottage consists of two bedrooms on the ground floor, each with their own full bathrooms, including a slipper bath and large shower in each. There is an upstairs loft area with four single beds and a third bathroom (shower and WC).

The house sleeps eight people (two double beds downstairs and four single beds upstairs). There is a large open-plan kitchen, lounge, and dining area leading out through a sliding folding door onto an elevated 65m˛ balau timber sundeck. The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, fridge and gas stove.

The cottage is ideal for two families of four or a similar configuration.

ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS

Fishing:
If fly-fishing is your game, there are six stocked trout dams on the Bend in addition to 4kms of Mooi River frontage. Please be aware that there is a rod fee/permit. Catch and release angling is practised on The Bend. The Trout Fishing policy and regulations are available from the Owners of Galway Cottage.

Other activities:
There is birding, a heritage of San rock art, challenging mountain biking terrain, and 40kms of horse riding (available through The Bend Country Lodge reception), hiking and walking trails. The Bend is also well situated to participate in the Midlands Meander which involves driving on the country roads from one spot to another, including restaurants, arts and crafts, animal farms for children and other areas of interest.

ABOUT THE MIDLANDS MEANDER

The Midlands Meander was founded in the 1970s by a group of crafters living in the area to encourage visitors to come and shop in their area. Home-grown, hand crafted and authentic became the trade-mark of the Meander which now has in excess of 180 participating businesses along the various well marked routes. The Meander abounds with agri-tourism, butterfly crafters where 80% or more of the items have been crafted by the owner, selective shopping in the country, and a variety of artists, crafters and child-friendly outdoor venues.

Some of our favourites on the route, in and around Nottingham Road: Bierfassl Restaurant and Pub, The Stables winery, Café Bloom (yummy Toasties), Günthers (famous for his Swiss/German sausages), the Junction for an aray of little shops, Tsonga shoes, Groundcover Leather Company, Linga Lapa (good biltong), and finally the Nottingham Road Brewery for some “Pale Ale”.

A booklet on the Midlands Meander is available at The Junction to guide you through your Meander.
