Up a steep country road, deep in the Dargle Valley in the midlands, is the large Crab Apple Chapel. Covered in ivy, it is a picture perfect country chapel. An icon in the area, it has now grown into a popular wedding chapel. Helen and Barend have lived in the Dargle for decades and developed a passion and love for the area. The Dargle Valley is lush and green all year round and resembles the Irish countryside. It is from this that it was so named. The original settlers, the Fannins arrived in 1847 and were reminded by the little stream running through the area of the Dargle River at Powerscourt, County Wicklow in Ireland and so named the place The Dargle. It experiences heavy rainfall and mist in the summer. Determined to preserve the natural beauty of the area, Barend and Helen were key in the development of a conservancy, The Dargle Nature Reserve and it was named a national heritage site. The ChapelThe Crab Apple Chapel was built in 1992. It was built and designed by Barend for the community. Sunday after Sunday, come rain, wind or shine, he would witness the community worshipping under the Crab Apple trees on the corner of his property. He then decided to build them their own chapel, Crab Apple Chapel. Barend sourced the windows and doors from a demolished Dutch Reformed Church in Pietermaritzburg. He built the chapel himself. At a later stage he decide to expand the chapel and added the apps with it’s large feature windows allowing in the warm glowing sun and letting the natural surrounds of forests and farmlands form a glorious backdrop. The chapel seats up to 170 on church pews. There are fully stocked ablution facilities and onsite parking with attendants. It is well signposted and electricity is supplied. It is 20 kms from Howick. Your own pastor will be welcomed as Crab Apple Chapel is multi-denominational. As Crab Apple endeavours to preserve the area's natural beauty, please feel free to release any nature friendly substances on exiting the chapel such as petals, bubbles, butterflies or birds but please avoid anything that will need to be cleared away or could harm the environment. As the chapel is situated at the end of a 5 km dirt road should the Dargle experience very heavy rainfall, which happens rarely during the months of January and February, the road may become adventuresome. Crab Apple Chapel which is hired as a complete unit including the pews and a red carpet. The chosen florist for the occasion is welcome to decorate the chapel with appropriate flowers and ribbons.
