Do It Day
When: Dates to be confirmed (Saturday, 18 September 2010)
Where: South Africa, Nationwide
Categories: Annual Festivals
Do it Day marks a renewed effort by South Africans to unleash the potent unifying power volunteerism has to fundamentally change lives, forever. Just like the values of Ubuntu; selflessness; and service, the spirit and practice of volunteerism is part and parcel of the South African identity. This spirit is reflected day-in and day-out in the unseen efforts of many ordinary people doing the most extraordinary acts of caring and sacrifice to uplift vulnerable members of our communities.
Do It Day projects are categorised into ‘heart’, ‘head’ and ‘sweat’ projects. An example of a heart project might be reading to the elderly at a care home in your community, whilst a head project might be using your computer skills to create a database or a website for a local organisation. Sweat projects simply require hard work and vary from fixing a roof to creating food gardens.
Do it Day is a summons to all of us from all walks of life to expand the frontiers of democracy, and service delivery in order to realise the South African dream of a better life for all. The challenges of poverty and underdevelopment require that each and every one of us, become the change we want. The act of being an agent for change is all empowering. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live. Most importantly, Do it Day encourages volunteers to develop lasting relationships with the causes they will support on the day.
In the words of Nkosi Johnson (1989 – 2001), Do it Day is a call for all South Africans to:
“Do all you can with what you have, in the time you have, in the place you are in”
