National Marimba Festival
When: Saturday, 28 July 2012 to Sunday, 29 July 2012
Where: Boksburg
Categories: Annual Festivals / Music Festivals
Making its debut in 2006, the National Marimba Festival accommodated close to 100 marimbas of varied shapes and sizes and hosted 450 participants (also of varied shapes and sizes!), representing 30 different schools and institutions from all over the country.
The Marimba Festival is set to continue this exciting trend. Living up to its reputation of being a truly South African gathering, the Festival will welcome participants from Gauteng, Cape Town, Grahamstown, East London, Port Elizabeth, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Swaziland, the North West and Mafikeng. Events include a Marimba Competition, Massed Marimba items, Drumming workshops, Dance Workshops and Interactive Drumming.
The eclectic and exciting mix of music experienced at the Festival gives a clear indication not only of South Africa's musical miscellany but of the versatility and adaptability of the marimba as a musical medium. Over the three years everything from classical music, to light pop and folk music has made it into the competition. And, of course, hearing young musicians playing traditional South African music has become a thrilling feature of the Festival.
