Miss Soweto Beauty Pageant in Soweto

The Miss Soweto Beauty Pageant is celebrating its 33rd Anniversary!

Soweto is Johannesburg’s and South Africa’s biggest township. Mr Leonard Sithole a founder and long-time organizer of the Miss Soweto Beauty Pageant, will once again be staging the event.

This beauty pageant was established in 1979 and was created to bring awareness to the girls and woman of Soweto.

Miss Soweto, a role model for girls of all ages, plays an important role in defining an image of South Africa womanhood based on grace, poise, health and eagerness to succeed and excel in life.

Miss Soweto stands as a beacon of youthful hope for a vast urban community of many millions of people, and inspires women of all ages, who are faced, on a daily basis, with the grim realities of drug abuse, HIV and AIDS, crime, poverty and unemployment.

This beauty pageant is one of Gauteng’s most anticipated and beloved annual entertainment events, which produced:

1987 Miss Soweto (Augustine Masilela) (Miss Universe)
1990 Miss Soweto (Batsetsana Makgalemele) (Miss South Africa)
2000 Miss Soweto (Doris Matlejoane) (Mrs South Africa)

Serving as a lucrative professional springboard for the young woman of Soweto, the pageant is the first important stepping stone and open door leading to a successful career for each year’s lucky winner.

Each year a percentage of the pageant’s proceeds contribute towards funding a worthy cause or charity in the entertainment industry.
