Sibikwa Storytelling Festival

When: Dates to be confirmed (Monday, 24 May 2010 to Wednesday, 26 May 2010)
Where: Benoni
Categories: Arts & Culture

We warmly invite you to come and share in celebrating this age old tradition of Storytelling and experience our histories, languages, cultures and music in performances and workshops featuring storytellers from SADEC countries and around the globe. The theme for this year’s festival is Celebrate Africa. With the celebrated storyteller Gcina Mhlophe already confirmed it promises to be a Festival not to be missed.

The response to previous Storytelling Festivals held at Sibikwa has been overwhelming, reaching some 500 teachers, 250 schools and countless members of the community. We have hosted storytellers from a wide range of nations and cultures, including prominent artists such as Kgafela, Gcina Mhlophe and David Rattray. In 2004, 50 American storytellers shared their stories with South African tellers in a single Story Slam session.

Workshops for librarians, educators, performing artists and learners have ranged from “The First Steps” in Shadow Theatre with Brenda Shafir to Jan Beeton’s “Another Approach to Storytelling in Schools”. Our Storytelling Competition, which is held on the last day of each festival, has always been a highlight, giving young and upcoming storytellers the opportunity not only to perform their minds and souls and histories, but also to win cash prizes!
