The Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein is a multi-purpose theatre that continues to host a number of fantastic events and performances, showcasing the talent within the borders of South Africa and the Free State Province.
The auditorium has 964 seats, as well as an orchestra pit. However it can be sub-divided by a curtain, providing an area with about 450 seats. The architectural design is unique in the world of South African theatres. The auditorium has no centre aisle, and there are no discernible balconies. However, there are four staggered seating areas to allow a feeling of intimacy while ensuring space and comfort. There are areas available for wheelchairs.
The imbuia panels were selected for their excellent acoustics, and are complemented by the design and palette of the chairs and floors.
The guest area is in the centre of the auditorium, and is served by a private lounge, which leads to the main foyer. The 26 dressing rooms have been voted the best in South Africa, and there are saunas, a spacious make-up room and a wig room to boot for the performers.
Excellent lighting and modern sound equipment ensures that each production is presented at the highest quality, giving spectators a world-class theatrical experience.
The Sand du Plessis Theatre has been used for cabarets, rock concerts, classic musicals, symphonies, ballets, dramas, fashion shows, pantomimes, and dance and music extravaganzas. There are licensed bar facilities on site as well as vending machines with drinks, sweets and crisps.
