About Umkhumbi Lodge

Umkhumbi is a small family-friendly bush lodge within a private nature reserve. We have 4-sleeper family chalets or 2-sleeper chalets, and offer a catered bush lodge experience.

Begin your evening by sipping sundowners with a view over the bushveld. The sunset is stunning from the restaurant deck and not to be missed! Enjoy chatting over drinks at the bar with other guests and guides. Dinner is served at the main restaurant, where we cater for all tastes and preferences. Bushbabies are regularly seen from the restaurant, and the stars shine brightly above the campfire after dinner.

Umkhumbi is ideal for family holidays with family chalets sleeping up to 6 people. Kids will love exploring the nearby trails and we have a swimming pool and play area as well as games at the lounge.

Accommodation

Umkhumbi Lodge offers accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned lodges, all nestled in the bush. We have 6 twin-bedded rooms and each lodge has 2 rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom. There are two self catering family chalets and one family chalet.

An inter-leading door makes these units perfect for families, as kids can easily sleep close by, while you still enjoy your privacy. Each bathroom has a bath and shower. All guest rooms are fitted with a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, private veranda and air con.

Accommodation rates are on a catered basis and include breakfast, or dinner and breakfast. Complimentary, tea, coffee and juice are available at any time.

Activities available

Umkhumbi Lodge is within Kuleni Game Park and a lot of wildlife can be seen around the rooms and close to the lodge. You may see warthogs while you are relaxing at the pool, or watch a wildebeest from your bedroom veranda. There are great walking trails on the property.

Umkhumbi is also ideal as a base to do various day trips from. We are ideally situated for the diverse traveller that wants a bit of bush and beach. We suggest a three night stay to get the most out of your surroundings. Umkhumbi is also a great place to overnight on your way to Mozambique.

Location

Umkhumbi Lodge is perfectly positioned to experience the best of the region, being very close to several wildlife reserves: Hluhluwe Umfolozi, Mkhuze, Isimangaliso Wetland Park, Ndumo and Tembe Elephant Reserve. Umkhumbi is on the Sodwana Road (R22), 17km from Hluhluwe town.

I can never understand why people would go to a large impersonal lodge when friendly lodges like this one exist. It is lovely to be made to feel like a friend or even one of the family. The staff are all friendly and nothing is too much trouble, Anton and Emma are perfect hosts and even their young son will do his best to answer your questions. As mentioned in another review Copper the dog loves making new friends and will follow you forever - well, as long as you scratch him behind the ear! I can't think of an evening when I didn't star gazing long into the night following the constellations as they tracked across the dark sky above me. I even faced my fears and held a large boa constrictor called fluffy, no one forced me to, and I'm so proud of myself! I am already planning my return!
