We stayed in cottage number 5 and we were very happy (due in large part to the fact that the cottage is right next to a field of grazing ponies - all ready to amble over for a few horsey scratches). We had stunning views of the Amphitheatre. The viewing of birdlife from our little verandah was unparalleled. There was just the sound of birds, a few neighs and the chomping of grass from the ponies, the occasional gust of wind, but mostly ... peace. It was absolutely blissfully quiet. Our cottage was cosy and private with a fireplace. There is an electric blanket for the chilly evenings. The bed was extremely comfortable with crisp, freshly laundered linen. The complimentary breakfasts are generous and delicious. They are delivered right to your doorstep. There is also the option of ordering dinner to be delivered to your room (at an additional cost) which I would recommend. The food was delicious - especially the homemade Melba pudding and custard. It is a lovely treat to have your room serviced every day whilst on holiday - no dishes to worry about. (Although it is optional should you choose not to have your room cleaned.) The cottages are a short drive from the Royal Natal National Park (the usual route has been temporarily detoured due to the road needing a bit of a revamp). Here you will find a wide variety of hiking trails - ranging from an easy 5k route to the more challenging day hikes. It is R50 per adult per day to gain access to the park. Best to take cash as the card machine is temperamental. All in all this was a very successful trip - mostly because of the beautiful and comfortable cottages. The hosts, Chantal and Vaughn, are very welcoming and quick to answer any queries. We will definitely be returning soon. It is a very manageable drive from Jhb and so very worth it!
