The Flycatcher Castle is a gem which I am so thrilled my husband and I were able to experience. We stayed for 2 nights in January 2014 and it was by far one of the best experiences we both have had. We stayed in the Puccini Suite and it was gorgeous and tastefully decorated. The bed and linens are extremely comfortable, the shower is extremely spacious (we had a view of the beautiful garden), and the bath tub is decadent. Manie, the owner, is a man of many talents because aside from the architectural marvel that is the Flycatcher, the cuisine he prepared for us was AMAZING. I moved to South Africa from San Francisco (a foodie city) 2 months ago and it was by far the best food I have had in the country. Literally, Michelin star standard. The detail he put into every dish was greatly appreciated and the food tasted as good at it looked. I would come back to Flycatcher just to have dinner if I were in the area for the day. When one thinks of a castle in modern terms, one might think of something slightly theme-park-ish but the Flycatcher is the furthest thing from a that. Nestled in the hills, it is a retreat where we were able to relax and take in the beauty of the nature which surrounded us. The exterior is reminiscent of medieval castles of Europe while the interior is a mixture of art deco and neo classical. Manie went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful (he even woke up at 4:30 am to direct us to a nice place to watch the sun rise) and I would highly recommend a stay at the Flycatcher. It was hard for us to say which was more enjoyable, the Flycatcher Castle or Blyde River Canyon... both are truly unique hidden gems.

What an experience!! We can’t think of any other place in the world where we would rather have spent our first day as a married couple!! We felt like a king and queen of our own castle. The Ruby suite is out of the world and over the top wonderful, the whole atmosphere makes you feel like a child again. The food is an artistic and taste experience, and Manie gives attention to the smallest detail. I would highly recommend Flycatchers Castle. We will definitely return on our first anniversary (or maybe sooner ;-))).

We recently booked the entire castle for a murder mystery weekend over halloween. The setting is beautiful in the Panorama route of South Africa's Mpumalanga province, with Kruger park, Bourke's Luck and God's Window all literally just around the corner(s). The castle itself, as one may deduce, is not historic, although it is built from reclaimed materials which give it a wonderful aged feel, which is further complimented by art deco (in a good way). The castle is decked out beautifully, both inside (including sculptures and paintings from the owner/manager artist) and in the adjoining gardens. Each of the six rooms (4 doubles; 2 suites) has its own theme, including en-suite facilities and stand-alone baths. Particularly spectacular is the Ruby Suite, in "Arabic" style, complete with it's own plunge pool, arboretum and mirrored (!) toilet. The food and service is excellent- a four course dinner (bring your own wine) and splendid breakfast. All the food is cooked fresh, and indeed in front our your eys in the open kitchen. It was excellent quality and special accommodations were made for members of the group with dietary restrictions. The castle even has it's own chapel, complete with a 7 foot high Jesus which appears to have been modelled on Chuck Norris. An excellent place to stay, particularly for romantic getaways or groups of friends.

I would like to congratulate Manie, from Flycatcher Castle with the excellent experience we have had during our stay in August. We really felt like royalty upon arrival and this continued throughout the time period of our visit. The meal course which was served to us was absolutely divine and out of this world! The castle in a whole was gorgeous and I would really recommend Flycatcher Castle to anyone who is looking to relax and be treated!
