About Oriental Plaza
Fordsburg is a charming historical suburb in Johannesburg (the commercial and retail capital of Gauteng), acclaimed for its rich history and its rooting within Indian culture and tradition. Oriental Plaza is a large shopping experience that promises a unique, rewarding session of retail therapy in the heart of the City of Gold.
This sizeable mall was established in the 1970's, and is as multifaceted and varied as the people that frequent it, representing the true diversity of South Africa.
Each of the 360 stores is individually owned, and their diversity appeals to the widest variety of tastes, preferences and shopping needs. There are shops for hardware, home décor accessories, jewellery, clothing, novelty items, gifts, upholstery, wedding accessories, leather, cosmetics, and luggage, amongst many others. There are also a number of restaurants that offer traditional Indian and South African meals, as well as a number of fast-food outlets. Interestingly, the Oriental Plaza is known for being the jewellery pricing hub of South Africa, maintaining a high quality at the lowest possible prices. This is a real one-stop-shop for visitors and locals in need.
There is plenty of parking available here, and the Plaza is open from Monday to Saturday. However, some of the stores are closed for prayers at the mosque between 12h30 and 13h30 on Fridays.
The Oriental Plaza enjoys its position within the character-filled area of Fordsburg. Nearby, other fabulous attractions can be found; including the Nelson Mandela Bridge, Ghandi Square, and the Market Theatre. The OR Tambo International Airport is about 50 minutes away, and there is a number of accommodation options scattered liberally in and around Fordsburg.
