 Western Cape Family-friendly
Holidays / Cape Town Family Holidays: The Western Cape province of
South Africa, with Cape Town as its capital, is no stranger to travellers with
families. This is an exceptionally topographically diverse land - from sandstone
folded mountains and fertile valleys that contain loamy to clay soils, to the arid Karoo
Basin that ends in a sharp escarpment in the north. The incredible coastline ranges from
wide sandy expanses and gentle waves, to rocky and steep mountainous crags that tower over
stormy seas. With regions like the Cape Winelands, the Breede
River Valley, the Cape Overberg, the whale
route and the West
Coast; and some incredible towns like Stellenbosch,
Swellendam
and Hermanus,
the Western Cape cannot fail to entice families with children of all ages to explore its
boundaries.
Countless child-friendly beaches offer hours of sand play, surfing, body surfing and swimming;
flea markets abound, and certain restaurants and coffee shops, like the Noordhoek
Farm Stall and the Barnyard in Tokai,
cater specially for children by providing play areas and childrens menus. Further
afield there is the chance for strawberry picking, in season, at farms like Mooiberge and
Mountain Breeze between Stellenbosch and Somerset
West; the Cango Caves are a huge attraction near Oudtshoorn,
and botanical gardens, like the Harold Porter gardens in Bettys
Bay, provide wonderful picnic spots for lazy afternoons.
The West
Coast National Park is an easy day trip from Cape Town and well worth it during the
flower season. Other reserves that make wonderful family outings include the Bontebok
National Park and the De Hoop Nature Reserve amongst others. |
