Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay is a prestigious town on the Garden Route, known for whale and dolphin watching. It has two elephant parks as well as a bird park close by, offers opportunities for sailing, kayaking and canoeing, offers a safari experience in a game park with drives in an open jeep, offers two golf courses, and wellness treatments.

The town was discovered by Portugese sailors in the 15th century, and its first name was Bahia Formosa (“Bay Beautiful”). In 1778 the Dutch East India Company claimed ownership of the Bay, and it was renamed Plettenberg Bay, after the then Governor of the Cape, Baron van Plettenberg. In 1831 a whaling station was set up on Beacon Island, later to become the site of the Beacon Island Hotel and now a timeshare establishment.

Location

Plettenberg Bay is 100 km from George airport, and a 5-hour drive from Cape Town and a 2-hour drive from Port Elizabeth. Knysna is 30 km away, and is also a popular tourist destination.
