I can never understand why people would go to a large impersonal lodge when friendly lodges like this one exist. It is lovely to be made to feel like a friend or even one of the family. The staff are all friendly and nothing is too much trouble, Anton and Emma are perfect hosts and even their young son will do his best to answer your questions. As mentioned in another review Copper the dog loves making new friends and will follow you forever - well, as long as you scratch him behind the ear! I can't think of an evening when I didn't star gazing long into the night following the constellations as they tracked across the dark sky above me. I even faced my fears and held a large boa constrictor called fluffy, no one forced me to, and I'm so proud of myself! I am already planning my return!

Umkhumbi lodge really is a hidden gem, and one of my most favourite places in the world! The accommodation is wonderful and so very tranquil; I had a perfect night’s sleep after relaxing on the balcony looking at the stars! There is so much to explore on the grounds and an excellent place to look for wildlife, always followed by the friendly face of Copper the dog! Then there’s the hidden snake room, a herpetologist’s haven! Full of some of the most amazing and beautiful snakes to be seen. The guides were fantastic and have a vast amount of knowledge, always willing to teach and take you exploring, making sure you experience everything the lodge has to offer! Finishing off the days at the Lapa with a cold drink and good company! Umkhumbi lodge is definitely a place to visit!
