We travel extensively and often travel internationally. In June we drove the Garden Route in South Africa. In a word, it is stunning! We took nine days to drive the route east to west, from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town.

We stayed in Oudtshoorn for 2 nights at Tonquani Lodge. The reception was by the owner Sheldene (a South African full of life) who was friendly, informative and professional. We were escorted to our chalet where we were very pleasantly surprised. Our chalet was configured with a large bed and a separate bath. The rooms were very nicely sized and very nicely appointed. The chalet was decorated traditionally. The chalet was stocked with complimentary fruit and drinks.

Just outside the chalet was a nice splash pool. Although it was winter and too cool the pool looked very inviting.

A full English breakfast was included in the room rate and it was very well done. Breakfast was served in the owner’s house, a 1920 restored Ostrich Feather mansion. Fresh juices, fruit, cheeses, cereal, breads, cold cuts, jellies and jams were displayed on a farmhouse table. We then ordered a cooked breakfast with choices such as eggs, omelets, bacon, pancakes accompanied by coffee or tea. On one of the mornings during our stay, the owner served as the chef. During our breakfast each day the service was very friendly and efficient and the breakfast was very well done.

The owner was very helpful in making recommendations for restaurants and for excursions. Check out too was friendly, efficient and professional. There were no surprises or “hidden” charges.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Oudtshoorn, thanks in large part to our accommodations at Tonquani Lodge. We highly recommend it.

We travelled from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town with a one-night stop in Oudtshoorn. We saw a lot of guest houses but this one was really beautiful! Two garden cottages with a swimming pool, excellent breakfast and good advices where to go for dinner or what to do in town. If we ever return to Oudtshoorn we will book Tonquani cottages again. We felt really welcome and it was a pity that we could not stay longer.

We spent 2 nights at the cottages and loved them.

Location - centre of town, short (and safe) walk to many restaurants and bars, nice gardens and a lovely courtyard pool area make it feel like it isn't in the centre of town. For good local food try Jemima's for fabulous ostritch.

Rooms - lovely cottage, clean, nicely decorated and the fresh flowers decorating the bed and bathroom each morning are a lovely touch. Great shower.

Service - brilliant, really friendly and so helpful. Great breakfast and fabulous fresh scones plus you can help yourself to delicious fresh oranges from the trees.

We stayed for 2 nights in February in one of the two cottages by the swimming pool. We were offered the choice of a large room, with a huge bathroom and a 4 poster bed, but the cottage next to the pool appealed to us more, especially after a long hot day on the road. That trip also made the complimentary ice-cold beer even more welcome.

The lodge is situated close to the centre of town but it has a secluded feel to it, being in a quiet location, where many of the ostrich millionaires built their weekend houses, and possessing a large garden.

The cottage was well appointed and nicely decorated with the fresh flowers and sprigs of lavender adding a fragrant, personal touch. A hearty breakfast, chosen from a good selection, was served and we were kindly offered a snack when we arrived back at the cottage around lunchtime.

The first night we followed our host’s recommendation to try Jemima's restaurant. This was a short walk from the lodge but we felt quite safe. The food was excellent and the service very good. The second evening, having followed a further recommendation to visit the Cango Cave during the day, we continued the theme by have a meal at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge. A magical setting to have a good meal as the sun sets behind the mountains across the water hole.

We will definitely stay in the lodge should we return Oudtshoorn.
