Deep within the folds of the Steenkamp Mountains, lies one of Mpumalanga’s best known wedding venues. The Cowshed embodies country living, traditional warmth and hospitality; the perfect place to begin your forever-after.

Located on the family farm of Wilsonia, The Cowshed provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy the finer elements of country living – languid days which melt seamlessly into one another, pristine views, fresh air and a variety of outdoor activities.

Accommodation

Thirty one guests can be accommodated in the three vintage renovated houses on the farm:

The Cowshed (sleeps 8)
The cowshed, a converted milking shed, boasts four sumptuous double bedrooms – each with an en suite bathroom and outdoor shower.

The Farmhouse (sleeps 7)
With a centralised living area and an enormous colonial style stoep, The Farmhouse features two double rooms, each with an en suite bathroom and an outdoor shower. The venue has two more bedrooms featuring single beds, two toilets and two bathrooms.

The Boarding House (sleeps 16)
Each of the eight double rooms in the Boarding House features its own entrance, en suite toilet and outdoor shower.

Each house boasts a beautifully crafted braai area, fully-equipped kitchen, stoep, as well as DStv. The accommodation is within close walking distance of our gorgeous wedding and event hall and is serviced daily. If you require additional accommodation for your wedding or function, we can recommend reputable establishments within close range of our facilities.

Dining

A full English or Continental breakfast is served and dinner is served on arrangement. Please contact us to discuss your catering requirements.

Weddings

The Cowshed offers a truly unique wedding experience, with wedding packages individually tailored to reflect the personalities of both the bride and the groom. Flexibility is key to giving our clients a truly memorable wedding experience. Receptions are held in the old shed which accommodates up to 120 people. The painted cement floor, wire and crystal chandeliers, together with the resident pair of barn owls, provide your guests with a setting both memorable and relaxing.

To date, our ceremonies have been noted for their innovative style and originality. The focus is on the unusual and the inspiring. Whatever your wedding requirements, The Cowshed is the ideal place to spend your wedding weekend. Weddings aside, The Cowshed is perfect for family reunions, special birthdays, or just for a quiet getaway.

Activities and Attractions

It goes without saying that fly fishing on the farm and the surrounding areas is nothing short of superb. With bass and trout lurking in almost every stretch of water in the region, anglers can look forward to some exhilarating fishing with the long rod.

Horse riding trails for beginners and pros alike, can be organised through one of our neighbouring farms, giving visitors the perfect opportunity to explore the countryside. Rides generally last from one to two hours and can be organised through your hosts on the farm.

The area is well suited to long lazy walks, hanging out on the veranda, sipping coffee, reading books, and watching the resident herd of Nguni cattle grazing at your back door. Game is abundant on the farm, with herds of eland, blesbok and black wildebeest roaming wild. You may catch a glimpse of the wily black-backed jackal and, if you are lucky, the sleek and silent serval who hunts after dark.

Wilsonia also boasts an abundance of bird life, with sightings of bald ibis and blue cranes which can be viewed from one of our portable bird hides.

The Cowshed is the perfect launching pad to explore the Badfontein Valley’s rich history. With breath-taking scenery as far as the eye can see, it’s almost impossible to imagine the area as anything other than an idyllic holiday destination. However, if you start to scratch away at the rustic charm and delve deep into the patina of the area, it soon becomes apparent that the quiet tourist spots of today were once bloody battlefields mired in political intrigue, feats of bravery and tragic loss of life. The area is also renowned for historical artefacts and archaeological sites which date back to the Iron Age, including the famed Lydenburg Heads.
