25 Hectares of freedom! We leasurely hiked and biked completely undisturbed in the recent spring-like winter weather. It has been a long time since I have been this close to nature. We booked the cottage after an acquintance of the owners recommended it. I see another couple had less fortune than us - but it at least seems to be sorted out now. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - it was neat, clean and comfortable. The view is unbeatable. Definitely returning in the summer to utilise the pool and braai to its full potential. Sweet like candy this Suikerbos cottage - keep it up! |

It is quite humorous that the overall impression rating on the drop-down menu does not even have an option to describe our experience, both for our stay, and the way the matter has been handled by the owners of the accommodation and the administrators - which was: TERRIBLE!!
After arriving from a long drive and then braaiing we retired to the indoor fireplace and noticed a large mouse running and hiding under one of the chairs. Went to bed around 12.00/1.00. When going to the main bedroom we noticed alot of mouse droppings all over the bedding, under the pillows, and on the floor - so it is clear that nobody came in to check that the house was in order before we got there.
We cleared all the bedding and used our own bedding which we brought for the dogs to sleep on. After about 1hr our dogs started running up and down the house between the main bedroom and the kitchen trying to catch the mice. We then realised there was a problem, but hoped our dogs would chase them away.....we then we realised there was more than one as our dogs were stalking in the kitchen while another mouse was climbing up the bedside pedestal and jumping onto the bed.....i am not kidding! The mouse actually tried to get into the bed while we were in it.
We didn't sleep the whole night and even considered going to sleep in the back of my bakkie....but it was too cold.
We left around 7 the next morning feeling really stressed and tired - this is not what you pay R950 per evening for.
My girlfriend and i were extremely disappointed as we don’t often get time together as she works most weekends. This was our first trip away together in months, and our first trip away with the dogs, so it was an extremely bewildering experience. Needless to say that the owners and organisers were not willing to refund our money - they offered us a "free" weekend back at the farm but could not guarantee that we would not have mice again. Now in my mind - it is not free if you have already paid, and never mind the extra expense of driving there and back.....only to be faced with the same infestation.
I also had to cover all the mouse poison in the house so that my dogs would not eat it - so if you plan on bringing your pets along, i suggest that you keep an eye out for this or else you might be spending your holiday at a vet. |

Hi Adri,
Thanks for a absolute lovely weekend. you were right Solitude and privacy is exactly what we experienced. Thanks for the clean cottage - the Panoramic braai area with hammocks overlooking the valley and Citrusdal village is an absolute gem.

Very relaxing and perfect getaway....
I can say so much abut this little secret gem, but the best part has to be the complete reliance on nature to be entertained,and what a performance it was.No electricity !No noise ! No light pollution !This was what we wanted and we had it al...We had an awesome mountain biking morning and after a stroll on the farm we had sundowners overlooking the brilliant sunset over Citrusdal,the braai was magnificent with the stars close enough to touch!Magical.Very comfortable stay with clean everything and no electricity ! Genius.Will be back very soon. |
