Green / Eco friendly facilities

Sustainable energy systems:
• Solar water heating
• Instead of Eskom electricity, we make use of 12 volt solar electricity with long life batteries
• Gas stoves etc. in order to do our bit for the energy saving (by not using Eskom at all)

We have our own recycling programme and the waste that the guests leave behind is taken to a recycle facility. Our activities are eco driven, hiking, bird watching, bass fishing and even our 4x4 routes are ecological sustainable.

And we do our bit for the Highveld fauna and flora. As many of you know, Black wattle (alien tree) is a very big problem in the Highveld and we are fighting the fight to keep them as little as possible (we want them gone, but it is a very long process) Also we are conserving all the indigenous small game that so little people even notice, such as the Steendbok, Duiker, Mountain Rheedbuck, “Bakoor Jakkals” and a number of other species.

Activities and Attractions

4 x 4 vehicle tracks:
Ribbokkloof Lodge offers exciting an exciting guided or self driven 4 x 4 experience (maps are available at reception) for those guests in search of a little adventure. The Ribbokkloof 4 x 4 trail is graded level two to four, and includes a 3km riverbed obstacle course and a 27km scenic route through Highveld vegetation.

If you’re lucky, you may spot one of our shy mountain reedbuck or even a family of warthog out for a stroll! Our trail provides enough variation to provide an enjoyment for novices, and an exhilarating challenge for experienced drivers alike; and has been designed to ensure no damage to your vehicle. (Note: 4x4 low range gear ratio is essential.)

Quad biking (own bikes welcome):
Choose your terrain and have a blast with your own quad bike on our mountain bike trail or 4 x 4 trail or simply bundu bash your way along Ribbokkloof’s 1100ha of off road farm road and single tracks.

Mountain biking:
Ribbokkloof is the ideal challenge for your bike! 1100ha of off road farm road or single tracks for the brave at heart.

Hiking trails:
If you’re longing to find that perfect close-to-nature spot, then Ribbokkloof’s hiking trails are just right for you. Our trails are all Green Flag accredited, meandering beside the mountain streams and rapids in an area rich with flora and fauna.

Ribbokkloof offers two types of hiking routes: network or circular. There are two network routes of 9.5km and 6.7km respectively. Our circular route is a two day hike (Day 1 - 9.5km and Day 2 - 6.7km) leaving from Stinkhout Chalet with an overnight stop at our rustic yet comfortable trail accommodation hut.

Swimming has never been so wild! Our sparkling pool is set right in the midst of nature, overlooking rolling hills and untouched natural vegetation. For our guests’ comfort, there is a thatch lapa as well as picnic tables located right by the pool. And if you really want to have some splashing fun in the sun, nothing beats swimming in our dam or paddling in the mountain stream!

Ribbokkloof’s dam is well stocked with plenty of bass to keep fishing enthusiasts happy. Guests are welcome to fish from the bank, or bring their electric bass boats, float coops, canoes or fishing kayaks; spend some quality time on the water, and maybe even reel in that ‘dream fish’.Guests should please note that while the dam also holds some carp as well as bass, it is not truly carp fishing friendly as you cannot drive all the way round the dam.

Bird watching:
Bring your binoculars and bird books, and come and lose yourself in the sounds and sights of nature. Ribbokkloof boasts over 180 species of birds, and the list is constantly growing as our guests encounter new specimens with every visit.

Day visitors welcome

If you’re in the neighbourhood but don’t want to stay over, feel free to come and visit for the day. A day visitor’s pass will allow you to swim in our pool, hike our fantastic nature trails and splash in the mountain pools. In addition, you can catch that prize fish and have a blast on our mountain bike trail.
