Oakhaven Guest House & Art Studio is situated in the village of Hilton, just off the N3 and right on the doorstep of the beautiful KwaZulu Natal Midlands. We offer relaxed accommodation in four self catering cottages, each uniquely and tastefully decorated with its own style and theme. Karin van Zyl-Davel, the resident artist, loves decorating with artistic flair and attention to detail. In her Art Studio, she creates, teaches and shares her passion for art.

We are ideally placed to explore the Midlands Meander, Southern Drakensberg region including Sani Pass or take a day trip to the sea. Private schools such as Hilton College, St Anne’s, Grace College and Cowan House are all less than 15 minutes drive from us with Michaelhouse about 25 minutes away.

We are also the perfect ‘sleep-over’ for sporting events like Midmar Mile, Karkloof Mountain Bike Classic, Duzi, Amashova and the Comrades. For the culture lovers, the Hilton Arts Festival, Art in the Park and Royal Show are some of the prime events in the area. Arts and crafts by local artists are for sale in the little gift shop.

Self Catering Accommodation

We have a range of four self catering cottages, each uniquely decorated to cater for the businessman to families on holiday, to sportsmen, to parents visiting their children in boarding establishments.

Sun Cottage (sleeps 2 - 3):
A sunny, north facing cottage overlooking the tranquil pool and garden. A double bed and beautiful bathroom with bath and shower makes this the perfect cottage for a couple. A sleeper couch in the living area allows sleeping for another adult or two children.

Quotes Cottage (sleeps 4 - 5):
A stylishly decorated two-roomed cottage. There is a double bed and sleeper couch in the main room and two single beds in the second room. Ideal for a bigger family or group of friends. The bathroom comes with a bath/shower combination.

Rose Cottage (sleeps 2 - 3):
The separate bedroom with a queen-size bed plus a sleeper couch in the lounge/open plan area makes this cottage ideal for a young family. (The bathroom has a bath only).

Out of Africa Cottage (sleeps 2):
This cottage is a bachelor style unit with 2 single beds, a kitchenette and shower en suite.

Art Studio

Karin obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Pretoria in 1980. Since then Karin has been teaching art at different schools and giving individual tuition. In addition she has done a lot of freelance work in the field of book illustrations, logo design, textile pattern design, calligraphy, murals, portrait studies and interior decorating. Paintings and drawings of various subjects and the use of different mediums are a part of Karin’s versatility.

Six successful solo exhibitions have been held and she has participated in several group exhibitions. Karin’s work is highly sought after by people from many countries and her clients come from South Africa, Europe, America and as far afield as Australia.

Karin’s work is also on display at ‘Round the Bend Art & Craft opposite the Lions River train station on the R103 in Kwazulu-Natal Midlands. Come visit Karin at her home studio at Oakhaven and enjoy her unique creative talent, join one of her art classes or put your name down for the next three day Art Retreat.
