A warm welcome awaits at Halkett Country House, an original hundred year old, colonial-style hideaway. The ideal place for family and friends to gather for long weekends, children of all ages are embraced in this safe haven. Well-suited for overseas visitors seeking true South African hospitality, this is 400 hectares of malaria-free Waterberg bushveld. Wildlife such as warthog, jackal, civet, caracal, kudu, nyala and bushbuck roam freely at this off-the-beaten-track rural escape. From distressed walls to parquet and Oregon pine floorboards, the echoes of a bygone era transcend the home. Antique wall sconces, brass lanterns and chandeliers softly illuminate, while furnishings are a delicate reflection of comfort and erstwhile style. Halkett is also pet-friendly. FacilitiesThe scent of simmering mulled wine atop the Aga stove and a hearty log fire are comforts on wintery evenings. Be enchanted by great literary works or historical accounts from the vast collection of traditional and contemporary reading material here. Relax and unwind in a candlelit aromatherapy bubble bath, before retreating to sleep as jackal and bush babies call under the African night sky. ActivitiesWitness the break of dawn with a horse-ride through well worn tracks and by day rest at your leisure in a hammock or dip into the salt-water swimming pool. Bird-watching is prolific from the verandahs or grab your hiking boots to explore the farm on foot. A sporting game of bushveld tennis followed by sundowners will refresh your body and soul. The sound of summertime is hailed fervently by a frog chorus and the chirrup of nightjars. Nature walks for children may be arranged with Mansel. ACCREDITATIONS
