Review by: Daniel Sissling, Maputo (stayed: October 2011)
We recently booked the entire castle for a murder mystery weekend over halloween. The setting is beautiful in the Panorama route of South Africa's Mpumalanga province, with Kruger park, Bourke's Luck and God's Window all literally just around the corner(s).
The castle itself, as one may deduce, is not historic, although it is built from reclaimed materials which give it a wonderful aged feel, which is further complimented by art deco (in a good way). The castle is decked out beautifully, both inside (including sculptures and paintings from the owner/manager artist) and in the adjoining gardens. Each of the six rooms (4 doubles; 2 suites) has its own theme, including en-suite facilities and stand-alone baths. Particularly spectacular is the Ruby Suite, in "Arabic" style, complete with it's own plunge pool, arboretum and mirrored (!) toilet.
The food and service is excellent- a four course dinner (bring your own wine) and splendid breakfast. All the food is cooked fresh, and indeed in front our your eys in the open kitchen. It was excellent quality and special accommodations were made for members of the group with dietary restrictions.
The castle even has it's own chapel, complete with a 7 foot high Jesus which appears to have been modelled on Chuck Norris. An excellent place to stay, particularly for romantic getaways or groups of friends. |
