About De Kelders Private House
Travellers to De Kelders Private House are well looked after. Guest rooms have high ceilings, ample light and ventilation and offer complete privacy. The house is a gem for the magazine, movie, book and music fundi. The large and spacious garden is a ten year creation of Overberg flora, planted with privacy being the keyword. The salt water pool is a welcome escape from the summer heat. The open terrace is secluded and offers the perfect hideaway for reading, drinks and a South African braai.
The ocean is 200 steps away; at the beach you can meander on trails and watch the spectacular sunsets over Walker Bay and talk with the whales (June – December), before you return for dinner. Simple courses are prepared by your hosts, washed down with local boutique estate wines. And then you can retire to the comfort of beds made with Egyptian white percale cotton, sleeping with the sounds of the whales to awaken refreshed to the smell of a country breakfast of home baked breads, home made jams and preserves , fresh fruit juices and freshly brewed coffee.
The house offers three luxury bedrooms.
Has a queen size bed, and a full bathroom with spa bath. A small private verandah looks out over the garden. From here, a few steps lead down to the garden, and the pool area where you can enjoy the warmth of the South African sun while reading, relaxing and cooling off in the salt water pool.
Is stylishly fitted with two single beds, with an en-suite shower room and separate toilet. A small, comfortable lounge leads to the private patio garden with beautiful views to the Gansbaai Mountains.
Has a king size bed, with a beautifully comfortable seating and lounge area. Shower room and toilet are ensuite, and there is a small study area. Glass sliding doors open onto a patio garden overlooking the Gansbaai Mountains.
All rooms have wireless internet access, ceiling fans and toiletries provided. A laundry service is also offered. Massage, reflexology is also available by appointment either on site or in the nearby Platbos forest - Africa's southernmost forest.
In the beautifully appointed lounge and dining area, you will find libraries of books, magazines, CD's and videos for entertainment, relaxation and inspiration. From here, you can adjourn to the terrace for afternoon tea, or sunset drinks looking out over the village of De Kelders and the magnificence of Walker Bay and the surrounding mountains. Here too, you can enjoy authentic Overberg cooking, with a famous bredie (stew) slow cooked in the Dover oven, or feast on food prepared over the open fire for a traditional South African 'braai'.
Activities and Attractions
Your hosts will happily advise you on local area travel arrangements and recommendations. Shark cage diving, boat based whale watching, sea kayaking, horse trails, fijnbos trails, forest walks, river cruises, wine tasting, country meanders are all within easy reach. These outings can all be organised by your hosts prior to arrival.
Within walking distance you will be able to experience land based whale watching, swimming in protected coves, the caves of De Kelders, the 7km coastal Klipgat trail on which you will experience incredible bird and plant life, see the whales and often be treated to displays from schools of dolphin.
