History of Constantia Mist
Constantia Mist, which until recently was known as Eagles Nest, has had a history as long as that of Constantia itself. It was originally part of the farm granted to Simon van der Stel in 1685. On his death in 1712, the land was divided into three farms, namely Constantia, Bergvliet and Witteboomen, most of which are now residential areas. The only remaining portion of Witteboomen that still retains its agricultural origins is Constantia Mist.
Constantia Mist has had only three owners in the last century the last being John Schooling who bought the farm in 1997. In 2002 he planted the first vineyards , which now produce a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc wine. This is the latest addition to the world class wines produced by its neighbours, Constantia Glen and Eagles Nest .
Many characters have lived at Constantia Mist, the most recently being the world famous potter, Hyme Rabinowitz. Hyme moved to Constantia Mist in 1967 and lived at The Cottage from 1977 until his death in 2009. The peace and tranquility experienced by guests staying at The Cottage is attributable to this kind and gentle man, who rose each morning and made his way slowly through the forest, past the vineyards and streams to his pottery studio on the adjoining farm, where for 42 years he crafted his magic which were to make him a household name in South Africa and an icon of the pottery world.
The cottage was extensively renovated in 2010.
