Towards the end of the 18th century, European stock farmers and woodcutters had established themselves in the district. The forests supplied timber to the furniture, construction and mining industries. Knysna was founded on timber and today the famous Thesen Island development replaces the old timber mill factory. The forest used to have elephants and it is said that there remains 4 Knysna elephants in these forests!
