Potchefstroom boasts a variety of historical treasures, each of which adds its own element of intrigue and heritage to the canvas that is this modern-day town. The Reformed Church is recognised as being the oldest in the entire Transvaal Province, and is a magnificent sight. The Anglican Church is another favourite, popular for its beautiful stained glass windows. The Old Fort is the site in which a massive siege took place in the First War of Independence (1880 to 1881).
The Gunners’ Memorial was erected to honour the gunners from Potchefstroom who were killed in World War II. The oak avenue extends for some 7 kilometres and boasts more than 700 exquisite oak trees as a living national monument. Other popular attractions include the Potchefstroom University Art Gallery and the Anthropological Museum.
