About Freddie Tait Golf Museum
The Kimberley Golf Club was founded in 1890, testifying not only to the appeal of this age-old game, but also to the history and heritage of this part of South Africa and the Northern Cape Province. It is here that the Freddie Tait Golf Museum, the first golfing museum on the continent, can be found. Freddie Tait was an amateur golf champion, hailing from Britain, who won major tournaments in 1896 and 1898. Sadly, this sportsman saw his demise in a violent encounter of the Anglo-Boer War in 1900.
The Freddie Tait Golf Museum showcases trophies and even artefacts from the very beginnings of this sport in Kimberley. This covers about 100 years of golfing history and culture.
The golf course is a creation of the acclaimed designer, Bob Grimsdell. It is a parklands layout with Elliott grass tee to green, making it rather unusual. There is an inviting 19th hole to which both local players and visitors from all over the world are invited. This club has hosted a number of important sporting events and well known names.
Visiting the Freddie Tait Golf Museum is not only for golfing enthusiasts. It is interesting and scenic, a worthy trip for the whole family.
