Lawn bowls is an ever-growing sport, and invites players of all ages to enjoy sunshine, fresh air and a healthy dose of challenge as they test their aim on the greens. The Beaconsfield Bowling Club, which merged with the Killarney Bowling Club in 2006, is home to a popular green in the heart of Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The greens were laid in the 1970ís and have, since then, seen rising success and popularity. They have hosted the President's Cup Tournament, the South African Nationals, the Inter-Provincials, and the District Championships; as well as a number of charity days and fund-raising initiatives to help organisations and people in need.
Lawn bowls is gaining popularity for its many health benefits as well as for the social nature of the sport. Not only does it improve the fitness level of regular players, but also their coordination and skill. Of course, enjoying the loveliness of the South African outdoors has its own set of mental and physical advantages that simply cannot be bought. In addition, it is something that players can do in a group, with friends or spouses.
The Beaconsfield Bowling Club is situated in Lower Houghton, near to Randburg, Cresta, Northcliff, Greenside and Blairgowrie, and the OR Tambo International Airport is only about 20 kilometres from the Beaconsfield Bowling Club. The area of Houghton and its surrounds are characterised by opulent homes, beautiful malls and lush greenery.
