In the foothills of the spectacular Maluti Mountain Range in the Free State Province is the little town of Clarens. It has all of the charm and beauty of a typical South African landscape. The Bokpoort Mountain Biking Trail is nestled within these surrounds, just 8 kilometres from the small town’s hub.
This 12-kilometre trail takes about three hours to complete and is rated as being at an intermediate to difficult level, meaning that it requires considerable strength and fitness and is not appropriate for beginners or children. It is a technical loop trail, consisting of about four loops. Some of the trail includes rock pools and waterfalls, through which it is sometimes necessary to climb off the bicycle and push it, rather than cycle.
While this mountain biking trail is in good conditional almost all year round, the coldest parts of winter may see it becoming a bit snowy and inaccessible. Therefore, it is best to call ahead between June and August, just to be sure.
In addition to mountain biking, the area of Bokpoort is ideal for horse riding, hiking, and camping. During your time here, look out for a range of antelope species, like blesbok, mountain reedbuck and black wildebeest. The mountains and valleys are the perfect habitat of choice for a number of stunning bird species. For those with an interest in geology, the Maluti Mountains will provide excellent opportunities for discovery.
