DESCRIPTION:

Relive the past in the luxury of the present. De Opstal Country Lodge is a great choice for your stay in the county side of Oudtshoorn. The Lodge consists of a group of typical Little Karoo farm buildings, beautifully restored and fitted with modern conveniences, set in a lush, beautifully maintained garden. The complex has a salt water swimming pool and a rustic restaurant where traditional breakfasts and hearty farm-style dinners are served.

We offer hiking trails, under roof parking and a free car wash. Added to all this, we offer the best personal attention by the owners and staff. The entire complex has an old world ambience with subtle modern touches which ensure a luxurious stay.

ACCOMMODATION

The beautiful farm house, stables and milking parlour date back to 1830. All the buildings in the complex have been creatively converted into modern, quaint en suite bedrooms with the retention of an atmosphere of rustic charm. The terracotta floors, heavy wooden doors and shutters and wide timber ceilings bear the scars, buckles and blemishes of generations of use and give the entire complex an authentic feel.

In this relaxed atmosphere Albertus, Matilda and Staff treat their guests to wholesome country hospitality and food, reminiscent of the bygone era of the 1800’s. Our 21 Suites have beed graded 4 stars by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.

DINING

Enjoy our famous cuisine in the restaurant. De Opstal offers a relaxing atmosphere in our lounge and bar area. Enjoy your favorite drink and discuss the day’s happening in the comfort of our ostrich-covered lounge suite.

Hearty farm style breakfasts are served in the spacious restaurant, which is also decorated in a style similar to the rest of the complex. There is a bar area for pre-dinner relaxing. Dinner consists of a buffet prepared from ostrich and regional ingredients. We are also prepared to supply guests with picnic lunches on request.

Please note: Booking is essential. The restaurant will be closed, if less than 6 people book for dinner. A shuttle service will then be available if guests wish to dine in town. Vegetarian options are available.

Ostrich Farm Tours on Award winning working ostrich farm

In 2006, 8th generation Schoeman from Schoemanshoek, Piet Schoeman, was elected the Western Cape’s "Young Farmer of the Year" and was elected as a national finalist for his ostrich farming practices. From the small vegetable and ostrich farm his father built up in Schoemanshoek, his farming activities have expanded rapidly over the last ten years and now includes 5000 hectares of irrigation and grazing fields for his flocks of ostriches, herd of Bonsmara cattle, Dorper sheep and Angora goats.

Piet and his wife Laura present informative tours on their farm Buffelsdrift, and this non-commercial, private ostrich farm tour is not to be missed. Tours are conducted in English, Afrikaans, German and/or Dutch.
